In these disciplines, data are nowadays not only numerical or symbolic, but they may be termed complex. For instance, the development of electronic health records enables information-based medicine, which requires the analysis of various, heterogeneous data, such as patient records, medical images, biological analysis results, and so on. Moreover, these data are often represented in various formats (databases, texts, images, sounds, videos, etc.), are diversely structured (relational databases, XML documents repository, etc.), originate from several different sources (distributed databases, the Web, etc.), are described through several channels or points of view (radiographies and audio diagnosis of a physician, data expressed in different scales or languages, etc.), or change in terms of definition or value (temporal databases, periodical surveys, etc.). Managing complex data involves a lot of different issues regarding their structure, storage and analysis.

Many applications log a large amount of events as data streams every day. Extracting interesting knowledge from logged events is an emerging active research area in data mining. In this context, we propose an approach for mining association rules from logged events in XML format. This approach is composed of two-main phases: I) constructing a novel tree structure called Frequency XML-based Tree (FXT), which contains the frequency of events to be mined; II) querying the constructed FXT using XQuery to extract frequent itemsets and association rules. The FXT is constructed with a single-pass over logged data. We implement the proposed algorithm and study various performance issues. The performance study shows that the algorithm is efficient, for both constructing the FXT and discovering association rules

Data warehouses and Online Analysis Processing (OLAP) have acknowledged and efficient solutions for helping in the decisionmaking process. Through OLAP operators, online analysis enables the decision-maker to navigate and view data represented in a multi-dimensional manner. But when the data or objects to be analyzed are complex, it is necessary to redefine and enhance the abilities of the OLAP. In this paper, we suggest combining OLAP and data mining in order to create a new visualization operator for complex data or objects. This operator uses the correspondence analysis method and we call it VOCoDa (Visualization Operator for Complex Data).

Abstract = {Data warehouses and Online Analysis Processing (OLAP) have acknowledged and efficient solutions for helping in the decisionmaking process. Through OLAP operators, online analysis enables the decision-maker to navigate and view data represented in a multi-dimensional manner. But when the data or objects to be analyzed are complex, it is necessary to redefine and enhance the abilities of the OLAP. In this paper, we suggest combining OLAP and data mining in order to create a new visualization operator for complex data or objects. This operator uses the correspondence analysis method and we call it VOCoDa (Visualization Operator for Complex Data).}

Warehousing data is not a trivial task, particularly when dealing with huge amounts of distributed and heterogeneous data. Moreover, traditional de- cision support systems do not feature intelligent capabilities for integrating such complex data. Therefore, we propose an approach for intelligent decision sup- port based on active XML warehousing. We exploit XML as a pivot language in order to unify, model and store complex data. Furthermore, Web services tackle the distribution and interoperability problems of data sources. They are employed for complex data integration and react with active rules for realizing intelligent ETL. In this paper, we focus on the integration phase and propose an architecture for integrating complex data into a repository of Active XML documents, based onWeb services and event-driven rules. We have finally developed a software prototype to validate this approach.

Nous étudions dans cet article les enjeux et les opportunités relevant de la prise en compte des utilisateurs au sein des entrepôts de données. Pour ce faire, nous présentons tout d'abord un panorama des travaux sur la personnalisation dans les domaines connexes des bases de données et de la recherche d'information. Nous présentons ensuite les quelques travaux qui émergent dans le domaine des entrepôts de données et menons une étude comparative selon différents angles d'approche. Abstract = {Nous étudions dans cet article les enjeux et les opportunités relevant de la prise en compte des utilisateurs au sein des entrepôts de données. Pour ce faire, nous présentons tout d'abord un panorama des travaux sur la personnalisation dans les domaines connexes des bases de données et de la recherche d'information. Nous présentons ensuite les quelques travaux qui émergent dans le domaine des entrepôts de données et menons une étude comparative selon différents angles d'approche. Ceci nous permet de faire émerger des perspectives de recherche sur la personnalisation dans les entrepôts de donnée.}

L’entrepôt de données actif est un système permettant d’intégrer dans une même base cible des données et des traitements. Le mécanisme qui rend une telle approche active se base sur les règles d’analyse. Dans ce papier, nous proposons une formalisation simplifiée des règles d’analyse, appelées également règles actives, suivie d’une modélisation permettant d’assurer le stockage physique des ces règles dans l’entrepôt.

Un entrepôt de données permet d’intégrer des sources de données hétérogènes à des fins d’analyse. Dans le cadre d’une collaboration avec LCL-Le Crédit Lyonnais, nous avons conçu un entrepôt de données à partir des sources de données de l’établissement bancaire pour répondre aux besoins d’analyse des utilisateurs concernant les opérations marketing. Cependant, ces besoins sont amenés à évoluer rapidement. Dans cet article, nous proposons alors une approche originale d’évolution du modèle guidée par les utilisateurs, leur fournissant ainsi des analyses personnalisées. Notre approche est composée de quatre phases : (1) acquisition de la connaissance utilisateur sous la forme de règles d’agrégation ; (2) intégration de cette connaissance pour transformer ces règles en une table de mapping ; (3) mise à jour du modèle de l’entrepôt ; (4) analyse en ligne. Pour valider notre approche, nous avons implémenté un prototype, nommé WEDrik (data Warehouse Evolution Driven by Knowledge), sous le SGBD Oracle 10g. Nous avons appliqué notre approche sur des données bancaires de LCL pour montrer l’intérêt de celle-ci dans un contexte réel.

L’ACI FoDoMuSt se propose d’élaborer un processus de fouille de données multi-stratégies pour la reconnaissance automatique d’objets géographiques sur des images satellitaires ou aériennes. Ces dernières sont segmentées afin d’isoler des polygones dénis par un ensemble de descripteurs de bas niveaux. An de leur affecter une sémantique, on applique dans un premier temps une classication. Si aucun objet géographique n’est identié, on tente alors un appariement du polygone avec les concepts d’une ontologie d’objets géographiques. Un algorithme de navigation dans l’ontologie et une mesure de comparaison sémantique ont ainsi été développés, paramétrables selon le contexte d’appariement. Cette mesure évalue la pertinence d’un appariement et comprend une composante locale (comparaison au niveau du concept) et une composante globale (combinaison linéaire de mesures locales). La méthode proposée a été développée en JAVA et intégrée à la plate-forme FoDoMuSt. Les premières expérimentations et évaluations humaines sont très encourageantes.

Nous représentons cette connaissance sous la forme de règles de type «si-alors». Ces règles sont utilisées pour créer de nouveaux axes d’analyse en générant de nouveaux niveaux de granularité dans les hiérarchies de dimension. Notre approche est fondée sur un modèle formel d’entrepôts de données évolutif qui permet de gérer la mise à jour des hiérarchies de dimension.

Les entreprises sont de plus en plus concernées par des données dites complexes, se présentant sous une forme autre que numérique ou symbolique, issues de sources différentes et ayant des formats hétérogènes. Pour une exploitation à des fins décisionnelles, ces données complexes nécessitent un travail réparatoire pour les structurer et les homogénéiser. La prolifération des données sous forme de documents XML incite à une solution d’entreposage. Nous proposons dans ce papier une approche basée sur XML, d’entreposage de données complexes contenues dans des documents XML, appelée X-Warehousing. Celle-ci définit une méthodologie pour concevoir des entrepôts de données complexes à l’aide du formalisme XML. Pour valider notre approche, nous avons implémenté une application Java et nous avons réalisé une étude de cas sur des données complexes concernant les régions suspectes sur des mammographies.

L’intégration de données par médiation est une solution pour les entreprises ayant des sources de données réparties et hétérogènes. L’utilisation des ontologies dans la médiation permet de gérer le problème d’hétérogénéité structurelle et sémantique. Dans cet article, nous proposons une méthode ascendante de construction des ontologies qui consiste à construire l’ontologie globale pour le médiateur et cela à partir des ontologies locales correspondantes aux sources de données afin de remédier le problème de l’hétérogénéité sémantique. Pour surmonter le problème de l’hétérogénéité structurelle, nous proposons un langage de requêtes et un algorithme de réécriture de requêtes exprimées dans ce langage. Notre langage permet d’exprimer une requête en termes de l’ontologie globale et les ontologies locales. L’algorithme de réécriture, que nous proposons, permet d’obtenir une requête cohérente.

Nous présentons dans cet article un nouveau banc d’essais pour l’évaluation des performances des entrepôts de données. L’emploi de bancs d’essais est profitable pour les utilisateurs, qui peuvent comparer les performances de plusieurs systèmes avant d’investir, mais aussi pour les concepteurs d’entrepôts de données, afin d’évaluer l’impact de différents choix techniques (indexation, matérialisation de vues…). Les bancs d’essais standards édités par le TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council) répondent au premier de ces besoins, mais ne sont pas suffisamment adaptables pour satisfaire le second. C’est pourquoi nous proposons le banc d’essais DWEB (Data Warehouse Engineering Benchmark), qui permet de générer à la demande divers entrepôts de données synthétiques, ainsi que les charges (ensembles de requêtes décisionnelles) associées. DWEB est totalement adaptable, mais il demeure facile à mettre en œuvre grâce à deux niveaux de paramétrage. Par ailleurs, comme DWEB répond principalement à des besoins d’évaluation de performance pour l’ingénierie, il est complémentaire plutôt que concurrent aux bancs d’essais standards du TPC. Finalement, DWEB est implémenté sous la forme d’un logiciel libre écrit en Java qui peut s’interfacer avec la plupart des systèmes de gestion de bases de données relationnels existants.

Cet article présente une nouvelle approche permettant d’appliquer des algorithmes de fouille, en particulier d’apprentissage supervisé, à de grandes bases de données et en des temps de traitement acceptables. Cet objectif est atteint en intégrant ces algorithmes dans un SGBD. Ainsi, nous ne sommes limités que par la taille du disque et plus par celle de la mémoire. Cependant, les entrées-sorties nécessaires pour accéder à la base engendrent des temps de traitement longs. Nous proposons donc dans cet article une méthode originale pour réduire la taille de la base d’apprentissage en construisant sa table de contingence. Les algorithmes d’apprentissage sont alors adaptés pour s’appliquer à la table de contingence. Afin de valider notre approche, nous avons implémenté la méthode de construction d’arbre de décision ID3 et montré que l’utilisation de la table de contingence permet d’obtenir des temps de traitements équivalents à ceux des logiciels classiques.

Many applications log a large amount of events as data streams every day. Extracting interesting knowledge from logged events is an emerging active research area in data mining. In this context, we propose an approach for mining association rules from logged events in XML format. This approach is composed of two-main phases: I) constructing a novel tree structure called Frequency XML-based Tree (FXT), which contains the frequency of events to be mined; II) querying the constructed FXT using XQuery to extract frequent itemsets and association rules. The FXT is constructed with a single-pass over logged data. We implement the proposed algorithm and study various performance issues. The performance study shows that the algorithm is efficient, for both constructing the FXT and discovering association rules

Abstract = {Many applications log a large amount of events as data streams every day. Extracting interesting knowledge from logged events is an emerging active research area in data mining. In this context, we propose an approach for mining association rules from logged events in XML format. This approach is composed of two-main phases: I) constructing a novel tree structure called Frequency XML-based Tree (FXT), which contains the frequency of events to be mined; II) querying the constructed FXT using XQuery to extract frequent itemsets and association rules. The FXT is constructed with a single-pass over logged data. We implement the proposed algorithm and study various performance issues. The performance study shows that the algorithm is efficient, for both constructing the FXT and discovering association rules}

The aim of this paper is to bring a new approach of XML documents clustering. We use a flexible representation of documents by considering both the structure and the content. The approach consists of representing XML documents by a set of their paths. Data warehouses and Online Analysis Processing (OLAP) have acknowledged and efficient solutions for helping in the decisionmaking process. Through OLAP operators, online analysis enables the decision-maker to navigate and view data represented in a multi-dimensional manner. But when the data or objects to be analyzed are complex, it is necessary to redefine and enhance the abilities of the OLAP. In this paper, we suggest combining OLAP and data mining in order to create a new visualization operator for complex data or objects. This operator uses the correspondence analysis method and we call it VOCoDa (Visualization Operator for Complex Data).

Relevant data for decision support systems are available everywhere and in various formats. Such data must be integrated into a unified format. Traditional data integration approaches are not adapted to handle complex data. Thus, we exploit the Active XML language for integrating complex data. Its XML part allows to unify, model and store complex data. Moreover, its services part tackles the distributed issue of data sources. Accordingly, different integration tasks are proposed as services. These services are managed via a set of active rules that are built upon metadata and events of the integration system. In this paper, we design an architecture for integrating complex data autonomously. We have also designed the workflow for data integration tasks.

Warehousing data is not a trivial task, particularly when dealing with huge amounts of distributed and heterogeneous data. Moreover, traditional de- cision support systems do not feature intelligent capabilities for integrating such complex data. Therefore, we propose an approach for intelligent decision sup- port based on active XML warehousing. We exploit XML as a pivot language in order to unify, model and store complex data. Furthermore, Web services tackle the distribution and interoperability problems of data sources. They are employed for complex data integration and react with active rules for realizing intelligent ETL. In this paper, we focus on the integration phase and propose an architecture for integrating complex data into a repository of Active XML documents, based onWeb services and event-driven rules. We have finally developed a software prototype to validate this approach.

The intention of this special issue is to present a collection of manuscripts that discuss novel and innovative applications of decision-support technologies such as data warehousing and data mining in medicine and biology. In these disciplines, data are nowadays not only numerical or symbolic, but they may be termed complex. For instance, the development of electronic health records enables information-based medicine, which requires the analysis of various, heterogeneous data, such as patient records, medical images, biological analysis results, and so on. Moreover, these data are often represented in various formats (databases, texts, images, sounds, videos, etc.), are diversely structured (relational databases, XML documents repository, etc.), originate from several different sources (distributed databases, the Web, etc.), are described through several channels or points of view (radiographies and audio diagnosis of a physician, data expressed in different scales or languages, etc.), or change in terms of definition or value (temporal databases, periodical surveys, etc.). Managing complex data involves a lot of different issues regarding their structure, storage and analysis.

Nous étudions dans cet article les enjeux et les opportunités relevant de la prise en compte des utilisateurs au sein des entrepôts de données. Pour ce faire, nous présentons tout d'abord un panorama des travaux sur la personnalisation dans les domaines connexes des bases de données et de la recherche d'information. Nous présentons ensuite les quelques travaux qui émergent dans le domaine des entrepôts de données et menons une étude comparative selon différents angles d'approche. Ceci nous permet de faire émerger des perspectives de recherche sur la personnalisation dans les entrepôts de donnée.

L’entrepôt de données actif est un système permettant d’intégrer dans une même base cible des données et des traitements. Un entrepôt de données permet d’intégrer des sources de données hétérogènes à des fins d’analyse. Un des points clés de la réussite du processus d’entreposage de données réside dans la définition du modèle de l’entrepôt en fonction des sources de données et des besoins d’analyse. Une fois l’entrepôt conçu, le contenu et la structure des sources de données, tout comme les besoins d’analyse sont amenés à évoluer et nécessitent ainsi une évolution du modèle de l’entrepôt (schéma et données). Dans cet article, nous présentons un panorama de différents travaux portant sur l’évolution du modèle dans les entrepôts de données. Nous comparons et discutons ces travaux selon les critères qui nous semblent pertinents pour cette problématique. Nous dressons également les perspectives de recherche qui en découlent.

Dans le cadre d’une collaboration avec LCL-Le Crédit Lyonnais, nous avons conçu un entrepôt de données à partir des sources de données de l’établissement bancaire pour répondre aux besoins d’analyse des utilisateurs concernant les opérations marketing. Cependant, ces besoins sont amenés à évoluer rapidement. Dans cet article, nous proposons alors une approche originale d’évolution du modèle guidée par les utilisateurs, leur fournissant ainsi des analyses personnalisées. Notre approche est composée de quatre phases : (1) acquisition de la connaissance utilisateur sous la forme de règles d’agrégation ; (2) intégration de cette connaissance pour transformer ces règles en une table de mapping ; (3) mise à jour du modèle de l’entrepôt ; (4) analyse en ligne. Pour valider notre approche, nous avons implémenté un prototype, nommé WEDrik (data Warehouse Evolution Driven by Knowledge), sous le SGBD Oracle 10g. Nous avons appliqué notre approche sur des données bancaires de LCL pour montrer l’intérêt de celle-ci dans un contexte réel.

L’ACI FoDoMuSt se propose d’élaborer un processus de fouille de données multi-stratégies pour la reconnaissance automatique d’objets géographiques sur des images satellitaires ou aériennes. Ces dernières sont segmentées afin d’isoler des polygones dénis par un ensemble de descripteurs de bas niveaux. An de leur affecter une sémantique, on applique dans un premier temps une classication. Si aucun objet géographique n’est identié, on tente alors un appariement du polygone avec les concepts d’une ontologie d’objets géographiques. Un algorithme de navigation dans l’ontologie et une mesure de comparaison sémantique ont ainsi été développés, paramétrables selon le contexte d’appariement. Cette mesure évalue la pertinence d’un appariement et comprend une composante locale (comparaison au niveau du concept) et une composante globale (combinaison linéaire de mesures locales). La méthode proposée a été développée en JAVA et intégrée à la plate-forme FoDoMuSt. Les premières expérimentations et évaluations humaines sont très encourageantes.

Dans cet article, nous proposons une approche d’évolution de schéma dans les entrepôts de données qui permet aux utilisateurs d’intégrer leurs propres connaissances du domaine afin d’enrichir les possibilités d’analyse de l’entrepôt. Nous représentons cette connaissance sous la forme de règles de type «si-alors». Ces règles sont utilisées pour créer de nouveaux axes d’analyse en générant de nouveaux niveaux de granularité dans les hiérarchies de dimension. Notre approche est fondée sur un modèle formel d’entrepôts de données évolutif qui permet de gérer la mise à jour des hiérarchies de dimension.

Les entreprises sont de plus en plus concernées par des données dites complexes, se présentant sous une forme autre que numérique ou symbolique, issues de sources différentes et ayant des formats hétérogènes. Pour une exploitation à des fins décisionnelles, ces données complexes nécessitent un travail réparatoire pour les structurer et les homogénéiser. La prolifération des données sous forme de documents XML incite à une solution d’entreposage. Nous proposons dans ce papier une approche basée sur XML, d’entreposage de données complexes contenues dans des documents XML, appelée X-Warehousing. Celle-ci définit une méthodologie pour concevoir des entrepôts de données complexes à l’aide du formalisme XML. Pour valider notre approche, nous avons implémenté une application Java et nous avons réalisé une étude de cas sur des données complexes concernant les régions suspectes sur des mammographies.

L’intégration de données par médiation est une solution pour les entreprises ayant des sources de données réparties et hétérogènes. L’utilisation des ontologies dans la médiation permet de gérer le problème d’hétérogénéité structurelle et sémantique. Dans cet article, nous proposons une méthode ascendante de construction des ontologies qui consiste à construire l’ontologie globale pour le médiateur et cela à partir des ontologies locales correspondantes aux sources de données afin de remédier le problème de l’hétérogénéité sémantique. Pour surmonter le problème de l’hétérogénéité structurelle, nous proposons un langage de requêtes et un algorithme de réécriture de requêtes exprimées dans ce langage. Notre langage permet d’exprimer une requête en termes de l’ontologie globale et les ontologies locales. L’algorithme de réécriture, que nous proposons, permet d’obtenir une requête cohérente.

Nous présentons dans cet article un nouveau banc d’essais pour l’évaluation des performances des entrepôts de données. L’emploi de bancs d’essais est profitable pour les utilisateurs, qui peuvent comparer les performances de plusieurs systèmes avant d’investir, mais aussi pour les concepteurs d’entrepôts de données, afin d’évaluer l’impact de différents choix techniques (indexation, matérialisation de vues…). Les bancs d’essais standards édités par le TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council) répondent au premier de ces besoins, mais ne sont pas suffisamment adaptables pour satisfaire le second. C’est pourquoi nous proposons le banc d’essais DWEB (Data Warehouse Engineering Benchmark), qui permet de générer à la demande divers entrepôts de données synthétiques, ainsi que les charges (ensembles de requêtes décisionnelles) associées. DWEB est totalement adaptable, mais il demeure facile à mettre en œuvre grâce à deux niveaux de paramétrage. Par ailleurs, comme DWEB répond principalement à des besoins d’évaluation de performance pour l’ingénierie, il est complémentaire plutôt que concurrent aux bancs d’essais standards du TPC. Finalement, DWEB est implémenté sous la forme d’un logiciel libre écrit en Java qui peut s’interfacer avec la plupart des systèmes de gestion de bases de données relationnels existants.

Cet article présente une nouvelle approche permettant d’appliquer des algorithmes de fouille, en particulier d’apprentissage supervisé, à de grandes bases de données et en des temps de traitement acceptables. Cet objectif est atteint en intégrant ces algorithmes dans un SGBD. Ainsi, nous ne sommes limités que par la taille du disque et plus par celle de la mémoire. Cependant, les entrées-sorties nécessaires pour accéder à la base engendrent des temps de traitement longs. Nous proposons donc dans cet article une méthode originale pour réduire la taille de la base d’apprentissage en construisant sa table de contingence. Les algorithmes d’apprentissage sont alors adaptés pour s’appliquer à la table de contingence. Afin de valider notre approche, nous avons implémenté la méthode de construction d’arbre de décision ID3 et montré que l’utilisation de la table de contingence permet d’obtenir des temps de traitements équivalents à ceux des logiciels classiques.
