This hour seminar looks at how Big Data and Artificial Intelligence are changing the way we understand, plan, and manage cities. Starting from the broader concept of the Smart City, it will explore how data from sensors, IoT devices, mobile technologies, urban infrastructure, and citizens can help us better understand how cities function and respond to everyday challenges. Rather than focusing only on technology, the seminar will consider how different sources of urban data can be brought together and used to support better planning and decision-making.
Smart Mobility will be used as the main field of application. We will discuss Intelligent Transportation Systems, connected vehicles, VANETs and V2X communication, traffic monitoring, smart intersections, and real-time mobility management. These topics will provide a practical basis for exploring how Big Data and AI can be used to identify mobility patterns, predict traffic conditions and congestion, forecast demand, and support more adaptive traffic management. The seminar will also introduce simulation and Digital Twins as tools for testing different urban scenarios and understanding the interaction between vehicles, infrastructure, communication networks, and the city itself.
The final part will look beyond the technology and discuss some of the questions that come with increasingly data-driven cities: Who owns and manages urban data? How can different systems share information? What about privacy, cybersecurity, transparency, and the growing role of AI in public decision-making? Using examples, research experience, case studies, and discussion, the seminar will bring together perspectives from Smart Cities, mobility, data science, and AI, with the aim of understanding how these technologies can contribute to cities that are not only smarter, but also more efficient, sustainable, resilient, and centred on the people who live in them.
